Lundi17 May 2010 Merida

We arrive in Merida after taking a bus from Campeche and visited Uxmal road. We have hostels listed, but, as everywhere, dormitories are often more expensive than a private room in a hotel not listed. So we start looking for a hotel. We begin our search near the terminal where a lady offers us a room with private bath at 100 pesos for two. It seems a bit hot and we decided to go see if there is better elsewhere. We see an ad offering a double room with private bathroom for 80 pesos.

We go to this address when a man approaches us in English and offers us a room. He said he made a great price because it is a new building, the "Zocalo 2." It starts at 250 then ends at 150 pesos for two, but with all the amenities, pool, full breakfast, private bathroom, hot water, large bedroom, kitchen, TV and WLAN. We'll take a look and it was persuaded. This means that the end of the journey approach because we never took that room when we can have half price elsewhere despite the accommodation offered. So much for spending ...

Merida Merida Merida

There remains a few days in this city. We get a small flood that surprises us. We are with our waterproof disposable wet outside, cross the streets with water to the knees. Notice that people are all barefoot. The water had gone down, but I could not get my camera before.

Merida

Merida is a city not unpleasant colonial and well situated for those who prefer to go back and forth to visit the surrounding sites. The hammocks are many vendors in the city and looking for new arrivals. We talk with "a young university that provides tourist information" and who says we have an incredible opportunity, because we are in the Mayan festival which takes place once in two years. Because that's two people that speak Mayan festival (the other was a waiter in a restaurant, who wanted to sell us a drink), we think. He continued by telling us that cooperative factory hammocks close tonight in 1 hour, and this for one week of the festival ... Here, one begins to have doubts. Out of curiosity, we'll still see the cooperative. Their "joke" preferred here is that there's bad for the Americans (United States) and the right stock at the right price is for others .... Of course, they ask us before our nationality ... For Europeans, it's bad for Americans, followed by Canadians for cheap and good products are for Europeans ... He explains everything so a little manufacturing hammocks before we launch price: 2000 pesos a hammock! $ 170 Canadian!

We inquired again that it will be closed for a week. He said that perhaps we will come back, because we return to Merida in a while. It is a bit shit, but let us go after we have said it may be closed 10 days and prices elsewhere are much higher.

The next day, it is a pleasure to go and say hello and asked him why he is not closed for this festival so important! It is interesting to hear him stammer reasons equally farfetched, it is because of the heavy rain yesterday, etc. .. He made a big smile and we continue our road.

Next Destination: Cancun through the site Chichen Itza, a site busy.
